Simulation of the Formation and Morphology of Ice Mantles on Interstellar Grains
نویسندگان
چکیده
Although still poorly understood, the chemistry that occurs on the surfaces of interstellar dust particles profoundly affects the growth of molecules in the interstellar medium. An important set of surface reactions produces icy mantles of manymonolayers in cold and dense regions. The monolayers are dominated by water ice, but also contain CO, CO2, and occasionally methanol, as well as minor constituents. In this paper, the rate of production of water-ice-dominated mantles is calculated for different physical conditions of interstellar clouds and for the first time images of the morphology of interstellar ices are presented. For this purpose, the continuous-time random-walk Monte Carlo simulation technique has been used. The visual extinction, density, and gas and grain temperatures are varied. It is shown that our stochastic approach can reproduce the important observation that ice mantles only grow in the denser regions. Monte Carlo studies of surface chemistry and nonthermal desorption involving interstellar grains.
Although still poorly understood, the chemistry that occurs on the surfaces of interstellar dust particles profoundly affects the growth of molecules in the interstellar medium. The most important surface reaction is the conversion of atomic to molecular hydrogen, which is a precursor for all subsequent molecular development and which occurs both in diffuse and dense interstellar clouds. Anothe...

The morphology of water ice in the interstellar medium is still an open question. Although accretion of gaseous water could not be the only possible origin of the observed icy mantles covering dust grains in cold molecular clouds, it is well known that water accreted from the gas phase on surfaces kept at 10 K forms ice films that exhibit a very high porosity. It is also known that in the dark ...
متن کاملOn water ice formation in interstellar clouds
A model is proposed for the formation of water ice mantles on grains in interstellar clouds. This occurs by direct accretion of monomers from the gas, be they formed by gas or surface reactions. The formation of the first monolayer requires a minimum extinction of interstellar radiation, sufficient to lower the grain temperature to the point where thermal evaporation of monomers is just offset ...
متن کاملProbing the surfaces of interstellar dust grains: the adsorption of CO at bare grain surfaces
A solid-state feature was detected at around 2175 cm−1 towards 30 embedded young stellar objects in spectra obtained using the Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. We present results from laboratory studies of CO adsorbed at the surface of zeolite wafers, where absorption bands were detected at 2177 and 2168 cm−1 (corresponding to CO ...

Context. Within dense interstellar clouds, from their periphery to regions deep inside, ice mantles on dust grains are exposed to cosmic-ray irradiation. Various swift ions contribute from protons to iron in the keV to TeV energy range. Observations show that in some lines of sight condensed CO molecules are an important component of the ice. Aims. We irradiate CO ices with Ni ions of relativel...
